The Bayelsa State government has reassured the community of Yenezue-Epie, particularly the family of the late Moses Akanda in Yenagoa Local Government Area, that it will take all necessary steps to ensure that justice is served following the unfortunate incident that led to the death of their loved one.

During a meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa, Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, alongside the leadership of Yenezue-Epie, the deceased’s family, the state Commissioner of Police, and other stakeholders, emphasized the importance of security agencies operating diligently and professionally, emphasizing the sanctity of every life until proven guilty in court.

The tragic death of Akanda, a young man, occurred during a raid by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency last Wednesday in Yenezue-Epie, triggering protests in the area.

In a statement released by his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, the deputy governor expressed condolences on behalf of the state government to the grieving family and assured them that every effort would be made to uncover the circumstances surrounding Akanda’s death.

Ewhrudjakpo directed the Commissioner of Police to expedite investigations within a week for the case to be presented in court, stating, “Let us give the police one week to identify the person that shot our son. The law is that, if you are going to arrest a person and the person tries to escape, you shoot below the waist and not above the waist.”

The government pledged its support for the deceased’s burial once investigations are concluded and assured assistance for the immediate family, particularly Akanda’s pregnant widow.

While cautioning against excessive street protests, the deputy governor encouraged the youth and people of Epie kingdom to channel their grievances through appropriate channels for peaceful resolution.

Acknowledging the government’s handling of the matter, stakeholders Ernest Samuel and Inatimi Timothy urged for swift actions to arrest and prosecute those responsible for Akanda’s death while emphasizing care for the deceased’s family members.

The meeting was attended by various dignitaries including the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, paramount ruler of Yenizue-Epie, and community leaders.
