In an effort to address the plight of displaced individuals from the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently formed a committee dedicated to their resettlement.

The primary goal of the Internally Displaced Persons Management Committee, as highlighted by the governor, is to provide relief to the affected populace.

Following the tragic incident on March 14 where hoodlums killed 17 soldiers, prompting a military intervention, residents were forced to seek shelter in the surrounding bushes.

The military personnel from the 181 Amphibious Battalion, which included high-ranking officers, were on a peace mission to Okuama when the ambush occurred, resulting in casualties.

In response to the heinous attack on the soldiers, the military took drastic measures such as setting ablaze houses in the community and launching a pursuit against the assailants, prompting the residents to flee for safety.

During the committee’s inauguration at the Government House in Asaba, Oborevwori emphasized the importance of reintegrating and supporting the innocent victims affected by the crisis.

The governor conveyed, “While we strongly condemn the tragic incident that claimed the lives of our brave army personnel, we are committed to minimizing the impact on the ordinary citizens of Okuama community.”

“Innocent people have been displaced, homes destroyed, and this unfortunate turn of events necessitates our immediate attention and action.

“It is our duty to ensure that the affected individuals receive the necessary support to facilitate their return to normalcy.”

Oborevwori stressed the significance of resettling and rehabilitating the villagers to provide a sense of belonging within their community.

He articulated, “It is imperative that we establish a thoughtful plan for their resettlement and rehabilitation before their eventual return. Our people deserve to feel secure and supported throughout this process.”

Regarding the committee members, carefully selected for their expertise, Oborevwori expressed confidence that they would carry out their duties diligently for the benefit of both Okuama residents and all Delta citizens.

“I urge you to prioritize this task with a sense of urgency. Our compassion and commitment to our people must be unwavering. It is our responsibility to provide them with the care they deserve,” he underscored.

The committee is constituted by notable figures including veteran journalist Mr. Abraham Ogbodo as Chairman and Chief Austin Emaduku, Director of Personnel Management of Ughelli South Local Government Council, serving as Secretary.

Other members encompass Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Festus Utuama, Reuben Izeze, Dr. Richard Kofi, Chief Oviri Uto, Josephine Oduaran, Obukohwo Ediyo, Karo Ovemeso, and Austin Ohwofaria designated as Camp Commandant.

In response on behalf of the committee, the chairman conveyed gratitude to the governor for entrusting them with this responsibility, assuring that they will fulfill their roles effectively and meet expectations.
