ECOWAS to send 40 observers for monitoring Togo elections

The deployment of an Election Observation Mission by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, consists of 40 observers who will be tasked with monitoring the legislative and regional elections scheduled for 29 April 2024 in Togo.

In accordance with the provisions of Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the regional bloc announced its support for Member States through this mission.

Mrs. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, the former Vice-President of The Gambia, is leading the mission, which comprises Ambassadors from Member States accredited to ECOWAS, representatives from the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, Civil Society Organizations, media professionals, and election observation specialists from the West African region.

The deployment of the observation mission follows the recommendations of a pre-election fact-finding mission that evaluated the preparatory phases of the elections during its visit to Togo from 15 to 20 April 2024.

While in Togo, the observation mission will engage in consultations with key stakeholders in the electoral process and closely monitor the voting activities leading up to 29 April 2024.
