A sad news has emerged in the theatre world as the talented Nigerian playwright and lawyer, Wole Oguntokun, has sadly passed away at the age of 56.

The announcement of his death was made by his close friend and filmmaker, Kayode Peters, who shared the news on his Instagram page on Thursday afternoon.

Reflecting on their journey together, Peters recalled, “I remember that year when we collaborated on your first play ‘Who is Afraid of Wole Soyinka,’ which we showcased at prestigious venues like The Muson Centre. Wole Soyinka himself graced the occasion.

“We later worked on the comedy series ‘Crossworld Blues’ for DBN TV, a project that you produced and I directed.

“Even after you moved to Canada, you continued to inspire and encourage me. With your passing, Nigeria has lost a brilliant mind, a gifted writer, and a true artist. Rest in peace, my friend, my brother, Wole Oguntokun @laspapi.”

Wole Oguntokun, born on July 15, 1967, was an active board member of Theaturtle, a prominent Canadian theatre company.

He studied at Obafemi Awolowo University and made significant contributions to television with shows like ‘Crossworld Blues’ on DBN TV and ‘Living Free’ on MBI television.

Actor Ozzy Agu reminisced about their collaboration, saying, “I had the privilege of working on a theatre production with Wole Oguntokun called ‘The Red,’ based on the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood.”
