Notice of Two-Week Strike Ultimatum by ASUU in Gombe State University
In a development on Thursday, the Gombe State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities issued a notice giving a two-week ultimatum to both the state government and the institution’s management to address its concerns.
The branch, led by Dr. Suleiman Jauro and Dr. M. Muhammad, indicated in a congress resolution that if its demands are not met within the specified timeframe, it would explore alternative legitimate courses of action.
The congress expressed dissatisfaction with the economic conditions in the state, highlighting the adverse impact on the welfare of its members who are currently owed.
Part of the resolution stated, “During the congress meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities Gombe State University chapter, held on March 28, 2024, discussions were held on various issues affecting the welfare of our members.
“The congress raised concerns over the university management’s failure to address the welfare issues affecting our members, resulting in a decline in morale among the academic staff within the university.
“The dwindling morale of staff is a direct consequence of the university’s neglect in addressing their welfare concerns amidst the prevailing socio-economic challenges in the nation.”
Citing grievances such as the outstanding Earned Academic Allowance spanning from 2015/2016 to 2023, overdue promotion arrears for 2020, 2021, and 2022, and other outstanding payments, the congress warned that if the authorities do not respond, they would pursue additional actions to secure their demands. The statement further emphasized, “The congress has collectively agreed to grant the university a two-week timeframe starting today to resolve the aforementioned issues. Failure to address these concerns within the stipulated period will prompt the union to explore further legitimate means of pursuing our demands.”
