Reports indicate that Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s ex-president, narrowly escaped a car accident during the night when the vehicle he was in was struck by a drunk driver. This incident unfolded shortly after electoral authorities disqualified Zuma from participating in the upcoming general election scheduled for May 29, intensifying the already high tensions surrounding the elections.

The collision occurred between the drunk driver’s car and Zuma’s official armored state vehicle, as stated by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The 51-year-old driver was taken into custody in KwaZulu Natal province on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving, according to SAPS.

Zuma and his security team emerged from the accident unharmed, with the 81-year-old former president being safely escorted to his residence.

Zuma, a longtime member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was compelled to step down from office in 2018 amidst allegations of corruption, yet he continues to hold significant political influence.

Last December, Zuma announced his support for the opposition uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party in a bid to revive his political career, a move that dealt a considerable blow to the ANC.

Recently, the ANC initiated legal action against MK, alleging that its name and logo bear a resemblance to those of the dismantled apartheid-era military branch of the ANC once led by Nelson Mandela, possibly causing voter confusion.

A spokesperson for MK, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, insinuated that the car crash involving Zuma was not accidental.

Ndhlela told AFP, “The police minister in charge of the former president’s security detail has not upgraded his vehicle for eight years and has made previous remarks about Zuma. There seems to be a hidden agenda here.”

He further claimed that Zuma’s vehicle was deliberately singled out within the convoy.

As the election approaches, political tensions are escalating, with indications that the ANC may secure less than 50% of the vote for the first time since the post-apartheid era in 1994.

Under increasing pressure due to economic struggles and allegations of corruption, the party is witnessing a decline in public support.

The recent car incident involving Zuma, less than two months ahead of the election, has sparked various speculations on social media platforms.

The driver of the other vehicle is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.

When questioned about Zuma’s condition, Ndhlela informed AFP, “He remains in good spirits and even found humor in the morning after the accident. However, it doesn’t imply he isn’t taking the situation seriously.”

Ndhlela added, “Zuma is currently praying in church, hoping to shield MK from any malevolent forces,” referencing the ANC.
