The Delta Government’s Decision to Refund Nursing Students
Explaining why refunds were issued to nursing students, the Delta State Ministry of Health highlighted key reasons for reimbursing unauthorised fees collected from over 162 students in state-owned nursing colleges. This sum, amounting to millions of naira, was obtained from 152 students at the College of Nursing Asaba and 10 students in the College of Nursing Sapele, covering various academic levels.
Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, disclosed during the reimbursement process at the College of Nursing Asaba that following student complaints, a thorough investigation uncovered certain unauthorised charges. He mentioned that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori strongly disapproved of these illicit fees, promptly ceasing them and initiating immediate refunds for the affected students.
Stressing the governor’s concern for alleviating financial strain on parents and students amid the current economic challenges exacerbated by nationwide inflation, Onojaeme emphasized that this action was a direct response to the prevailing circumstances.
