Why people do strange incredible things for love Psychologist

Recent events have highlighted the lengths some individuals are willing to go to in the name of love. These acts, fueled by complex emotions, often lead to tragic consequences.

Take, for example, the case of Aisha Bukar Gambo, who was attacked by her husband’s mistress in Borno State. Confronting the ‘other woman’ proved to be a near-fatal decision for Aisha, ending in a violent altercation.

In a separate incident in South Africa, a man named Joshua Mathebula took his own life after a jealous rage led him to fatally harm his girlfriend. His actions were driven by a toxic mix of jealousy and betrayal.

Similarly, Aisha Aliyu’s story in Niger State is one of marital discord turned deadly. Her impulsive and violent act resulted in the tragic death of her husband, revealing a turbulent relationship fraught with unresolved issues.

Not limited to any gender, instances like these shed light on the dark side of love and its potential to incite irrational and dangerous behavior.

Delving into the psychology behind such extreme actions, Dr. Leonard Okonkwo, a Consultant Psychologist at LASUTH, points to the phenomenon known as Othello Syndrome. This syndrome, characterized by pathological jealousy, can drive individuals to commit heinous acts in the name of love.

According to Dr. Okonkwo, irrational jealousy can stem from underlying psychiatric issues, distorting one’s perception of reality and leading to destructive behaviors.

He emphasizes that love, in its true essence, should never manifest in harm or violence towards a partner. The distorted beliefs and obsessive behaviors associated with Othello Syndrome underscore the need for a deeper understanding of how emotions can drive individuals to extreme measures.

These tragic tales serve as a stark reminder of the complexities of human relationships and the devastating consequences that can arise when love turns toxic.

According to Dr. Okonkwo, possessiveness towards someone is driven by an intense obsession rather than just jealousy. Individuals engaging in such behaviors often interpret their partner’s actions as acts of betrayal, viewing it as a personal attack on them.

The feeling of being cheated on can provoke feelings of inadequacy and rejection, leading to a desire for retaliation. This desire for revenge may stem from overwhelming emotions such as bitterness, pain, and sadness, where harming the perceived perpetrator becomes a way to cope with the hurt.

While the intent may not always be to cause harm, the escalation of emotions can sometimes result in unintended consequences, including fatal outcomes. Factors such as the perception of betrayal, feelings of rejection, and overwhelming negative emotions like hatred can contribute to these extreme behaviors.

When faced with emotional turmoil and a sense of betrayal, individuals may feel the need to seek retribution or inflict pain on the one they love. This desire for vindication is often driven by a deep-seated emotional response to feeling wronged, which can even be exacerbated by underlying psychiatric conditions.

Understanding these complex motivations sheds light on why individuals may act irrationally or aggressively towards their loved ones. It is a manifestation of their emotional turmoil and the need to address the perceived injustices they have experienced.
