Students in Bauchi at risk of losing scholarship due to lack of commitment

In Bauchi State, the government is considering withdrawing financial support for external exam fees for Senior Secondary Three (SS3) students who are frequently absent from classes. This warning was conveyed by the Commissioner for Education, Jamila Dahiru, during her recent inspections and monitoring visits to schools in Bauchi.

Governor Bala Mohammed has allocated N396.9 million for the 2023/2024 external exams of 14,170 public school students, which include exams like WAEC, NECO, NBAIS, and JAMB.

Dahiru expressed dismay at the low attendance rates among SS3 students in some schools, emphasizing the importance of regular attendance and serious preparation. She threatened to revoke scholarships for students who are not committed to their studies.

She commented on the situation, stating, “It is disheartening to see students neglecting their studies after receiving government support for their education. Parents should take responsibility and ensure their children attend classes regularly in preparation for their exams.”

She further stated, “We want to focus our resources on students who are dedicated to their education. Therefore, I have directed that all sponsored students must attend classes throughout the term before their exams. Those who are not willing to put in the effort will have their scholarships revoked.”

Addressing teachers, Dahiru also emphasized the importance of punctuality and adherence to the teaching schedule. She instructed that all teachers must be present at schools by 7:30 am and no later than 9 am.
