Strong warning from Governor Eno against vandalism of public infrastructure
In Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has issued a stern caution to the residents regarding the destruction of facilities meant for public benefit.
This warning was given during the inauguration ceremony of a 1.3-kilometre underground concrete flood control tunnel, the reconstruction of a portion of Atiku Abubakar Way including sidewalks, drainage systems, and solar-powered street lights. Also, the reconstruction of a 1-kilometer stretch of Afaha Ube road projects in the capital city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He urged the youth to take ownership of these projects by ensuring the protection of facilities in their vicinity. Governor Eno emphasized that the funds utilized for these constructions come from the people, stating, “We should not destroy what the government has invested so much in fixing. This money does not belong to me alone; it belongs to us all. If you witness anyone damaging government property, remember it is your money being wasted. Stand up and hold them accountable.”
Referring to the Atiku Abubakar Road and drainage initiatives as outcomes of faith and necessity, Governor Eno highlighted that these projects were initiated by his administration in response to the demands of the citizens.
During the commissioning of the flood control project, former President Goodluck Jonathan commended Governor Eno for his proactive stance, especially in light of recent flood alerts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. He urged the people of Akwa Ibom to remain vigilant against criminal elements and the destruction of public infrastructure.
Providing an overview of the project, the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Professor Eno Ibanga, mentioned that the project, awarded in August 2023, has been completed as per specifications. It is designed to eliminate flooding along Atiku Abubakar Way and its surroundings while revitalizing the city area.
