  • Telecommunication providers in Nigeria claim they have refrained from raising prices for the past 11 years amidst escalating inflation.
  • In a recent joint statement, the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) highlighted this stance.
  • Both associations expressed concern that the current pricing structure in the telecom sector does not reflect economic conditions, posing a threat to the industry’s viability and potentially undermining investor trust.
  • The operators are now urging the Nigerian Communications Commission to approve adjustments in prices for the sector.
  • ALTON and ATCON emphasized that significant investments are required for the development of telecommunications infrastructure, including network expansion, maintenance, and tech upgrades.
  • Despite challenging economic circumstances, the telecom industry has not revised its pricing framework upward for over a decade due to regulatory limitations.
  • “In a fully liberalized and deregulated sector, the existing price controls, disconnected from economic realities, jeopardize industry sustainability and investor confidence,” said Engr. Gbenga Adebayo of ALTON and Engr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere of ATCON.
  • The statement calls on the government to engage in constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to tackle pricing issues while ensuring a balance between consumer affordability and operators’ financial stability.
  • The plea comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s high inflation rate, reaching 33.20% in March 2024, coupled with escalating energy expenses within the country.
