In a bid to strengthen border security, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged for increased collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

This call was made during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Mission of IOM Nigeria, Laurent De Boeck, to the Minister in Abuja.

Highlighting the importance of working together, Tunji-Ojo emphasized that there is still more ground to cover for the Nigerian government.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress report provided, commending the partnership between IOM and the Nigeria Immigration Service. Particularly, he praised the effectiveness of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) in facilitating seamless access to information and data.

The Minister stressed the significance of integrating the MIDAS solution with Interpol 24/7, which plays a crucial role in the national security framework and the enhancement of border security.

Regarding the implementation of E-gates at Nigerian airports, the Minister clarified that these gates are exclusively for Nigerian passengers, aimed at streamlining the travel experience and bolstering national security.

He underscored the importance of providing officers with necessary tools like the MIDAS solution and E-gates, stating, “Our officers, no matter how well trained they are, do not have detectors in their eyes, they can only work with the data and information available to them.”

Furthermore, the Minister mentioned the government’s interest in simplifying the visa application process for legitimate visitors to Nigeria.

During the meeting, Laurent De Boeck, the Chief of Mission at IOM Nigeria, provided an update on the collaborative projects with the Nigeria Immigration Service, reiterating IOM’s readiness to support the Ministry of Interior.
