Once again, a fire has ravaged the Gamboru market located near the Customs area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The market, known to be the largest perishable goods market in Maiduguri, suffered similar incidents on March 18, 2023, and November 13, 2023.

Confirmation of the recent incident came from Alhaji Usman Tar, the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security. Tar mentioned that the fire erupted in the Layin Yan Katako and outer sections of the market.

In a statement, Tar revealed that the flames were brought under control by the fire service after the incident occurred on Wednesday around 10 pm.

“A team of firefighters from the Borno State Fire Service quickly responded to the scene and successfully put out the fire.

“No casualties were reported, and the market’s security remained intact,” he stated.

An on-the-spot assessment is being conducted by the fire service and the State Emergency Management Agency to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrences.

The commissioner assured that the state government would take necessary measures to prevent fire disasters in the future.

He urged the public to uphold law and order and ensure the market’s safety is not compromised.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this incident on behalf of the Borno State Government.

“We are grateful for the swift response of the first responders, which prevented the fire from spreading further,” he added.
