Police in Enugu Rescue Abducted Victims, Dispute Viral Video

Following a confrontation with kidnappers along Eke/Ebe Road in Udi Local Government Area, the Enugu State Police Command and the Neighbourhood Watch Group successfully rescued abducted victims.

In a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the rescue operation took place on Wednesday.

The statement explained that on March 31, 2024, around 6:15 p.m., operatives from Ezinze Police Division in Enugu State, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, intervened to rescue victims who had been kidnapped around 4:55 p.m. the same day on the Eke/Ebe Road in Udi Local Government Area. The abductors fled the scene after a fierce exchange of gunfire, leaving the victims behind.

The swift response of the team was crucial in the immediate rescue of the victims, who were reportedly travelling in two Mercedes Benz 4Matic Jeeps when they were attacked and taken into the forest.

Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the abductors.

However, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, criticized a viral video that alleged another police team failed to enter the forest to rescue the victims. According to the Commissioner, the second team, unaware of the first team’s actions and awaiting precise intelligence instructions, decided not to enter the forest immediately upon arrival at the scene to prevent unintended consequences.

CP Uzuegbu denounced the video’s claims as a deliberate attempt to discredit the police and divert attention from the ongoing efforts to eliminate hardened criminals in Enugu State.

The Commissioner stressed that the video was misleading and aimed at distorting the facts, but assured the public that the police would remain resolute in their commitment to ridding Enugu State of criminal elements, despite such attempts to undermine their work.
