Speaking to journalists in Enugu, President of the South East Development Peace Initiative (SPDI) Hon Vitus Okechi applauded the recent progress made by the military in combating terrorism and insurgency. Okechi expressed confidence in the military’s efforts, stating that victory in the battle against terrorism is on the horizon.

He lauded President Bola Tinubu for appointing Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja as the Chief of Army Staff, emphasizing the commitment, resolve, and dedication shown by the army leader in eliminating terrorists nationwide.

Recalling recent operations in Zamfara and Katsina states, Okechi highlighted the successful raids that resulted in the elimination of 11 terrorists. In Zamfara, a raid on the hideout of terrorists’ leader Hassan Yantagwaye in Tsafe Local Government Area led to a gun battle where two of his associates were killed. Meanwhile, in Katsina State, troops engaged terrorists in multiple locations, neutralizing eight terrorists and seizing weapons and military gear.

Additionally, Okechi noted the surrender of the most wanted Boko Haram commander, Mallam Yathabalwe, who had been responsible for various attacks and killings in Gwoza and surrounding areas.

He also highlighted a successful raid by the Joint Task Force, Operation UDO KA, in Orlu and its environs, resulting in the dismantling of a camp belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State. The operation led to the recovery of explosive devices, weapons, and other incriminating items.

Okechi praised Lagbaja for the ongoing successes of the Nigerian Army under his leadership, emphasizing the commitment to eliminating insurgents and safeguarding the nation’s peace. Lagbaja had reassured Nigerians of the army’s determination to defeat terrorists, bandits, and other threats in his recent Easter message.
