Guber Polls: Ondo APC Elders Under Fire for Endorsing Aiyedatiwa

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Ondo State, some governorship aspirants are criticizing the endorsement of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by certain elders of the party, labeling it as deceptive and farcical.

Members of the APC Aborigines group, representing the disgruntled aspirants, have rebuked the elders, asserting that they do not possess the authority to vet and favor any of the 14 gubernatorial hopefuls.

Expressing his dismay, Wale Akinterinwa denounced the endorsement as a sham that is unlikely to hold up over time.

Segun Ajiboye, speaking on behalf of the Akinterinwa Campaign Organisation, emphasized the long-standing allegiance of the elders to Aiyedatiwa.

“During Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s official declaration of intent to run for office, both Ambassador Sola Iji and Senator Ajayi Boroffice were prominently in attendance,” mentioned Ajiboye.

In a similar vein, Ojo Oyewamide, the spokesperson for the Olusola Oke Campaign, remarked, “This endorsement falls short of the standard a genuine endorsement should meet.”

“It is widely known that these individuals have consistently supported Aiyedatiwa and were present at his recent declaration in Akure,” Oyewamide added.

Prior to this, the elders had officially thrown their weight behind Aiyedatiwa and proposed him as the preferred candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Leader of the group, Sola Iji, a former Ambassador to Togo, disclosed that after a meeting in the state capital, Akure, the decision to support Aiyedatiwa was based on his noteworthy achievements in the state since assuming office.

Iji stated that Aiyedatiwa was selected as the favored candidate after a comprehensive evaluation and review of the aspirants by a nine-member committee, which ranked the late Paul Akintelure, Akinterinwa, and Aiyedatiwa as the top three contenders.

According to the committee’s assessment, Aiyedatiwa obtained 777 points, while the late Akintelure secured 612 points, and Akinterinwa garnered 587 points.
