The Situation with Guber Polls in Ondo: Aspirants React to Endorsement

Some governorship aspirants in Ondo State are not happy with the recent endorsement of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by certain elders within the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s candidate for the upcoming primaries.

These aspirants, coming together under the umbrella of APC Aborigines, have criticized the elders, claiming they do not have the authority to choose and back any of the 14 governorship hopefuls.

Wale Akinterinwa, speaking on behalf of the discontented aspirants, labeled the endorsement as shameful and predicted that it was deceptive and would not be enduring.

Segun Ajiboye, the spokesperson for the Akinterinwa Campaign Organisation, pointed out that the elders had always shown support for Aiyedatiwa, citing their presence during the governor’s official declaration of intent to run for office, alongside Ambassador Sola Iji and Senator Ajayi Boroffice.

On a similar note, the representative of the Olusola Oke Campaign, Ojo Oyewamide expressed disappointment in the endorsement, branding it as a mere facade of what a genuine endorsement should entail.

The elders had previously thrown their weight behind Aiyedatiwa, recommending him as the APC’s preferred candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial election. This decision, as explained by group leader Sola Iji, a former Ambassador to Togo, was based on Aiyedatiwa’s remarkable achievements within a short time as governor.

Iji detailed that Aiyedatiwa was chosen after an evaluation process by a nine-member committee, which ranked him on top with 777 points, followed by the late Paul Akintelure and Akinterinwa with 612 and 587 points respectively.

The displeased aspirants have raised their concerns about the authenticity and legitimacy of the elders’ endorsement of Aiyedatiwa, setting the stage for a potentially contentious party primary in Ondo.
