Appearing in Abuja today, Tuesday, at the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, ex-Petroleum Minister Timipire Sylva is prepared to provide testimony challenging the victory of Governor Douye Diri in the November 11, 2023, governorship election in Bayelsa State.

Sylva, who represented the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the gubernatorial poll, will serve as a key witness in his petition seeking to nullify Diri’s election victory.

A notice for the hearing, identified by NewsNow, indicates that the APC gubernatorial candidate will be guided in his testimony by his lead counsels Ahmed Raji and Ogwu James Onoja, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

The former Minister and former governor of Bayelsa State will be sharing his perspective on the gubernatorial election with the Tribunal.

After Sylva testifies, Governor Diri, the victor of the election and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will have the opportunity to question him regarding the truthfulness of any claims or allegations brought forth.

Governor Diri is being represented by a team of senior lawyers led by Chris Uche, SAN, at the Tribunal.

Furthermore, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which oversaw the disputed election, will have the chance to cross-examine the APC gubernatorial candidate on his election-related allegations.

As reported by Returning Officer Professor Faruq Kuta, the PDP and Diri received 175,196 votes, securing victory over their closest rival, Timipre Sylva of the APC, who garnered 110,108 votes.

Unsatisfied with the results, Sylva and the APC have taken their case to the tribunal to contest the declaration of Diri as the election winner.

Today’s session will be overseen by Justice Adekunle Adeleye, Chairman of the Tribunal.
