Police confirm attack on Adamawa community begin investigation

The detention of police officers who allegedly shot a Vigilante Commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group in Delta has been confirmed by the Delta State Police Command.

According to reports, the officers reportedly stormed Jesse town, the traditional headquarters of Idjerhe Kingdom, on January 30, 2024, and shot the vigilante commander, Mr Freeborn Ofeshohwo alias Cornerstone, along with two other members identified as Friday Johnson and Enor Young.

Following public outcry, the state commissioner of police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, condemned the shooting and disclosed that the officers had been identified and detained for their involvement in the incident. He assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and justice would be served.

CP Olufemi also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police State Criminal Investigation Department to commence a full-scale investigation into the incident. He emphasized that the officers involved had been detained, while an internal disciplinary action had been initiated. The CP further warned that such conduct would not be tolerated under his watch and reaffirmed the commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens.

The arrest follows protests across Idjerhe Kingdom, and the three victims are currently receiving medical attention for the injuries sustained during the attack. The people of the area, led by the Otota of Idjerhe Kingdom, Chief Onosia James Obriki, have condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the officers involved.

The swift action by the Delta State Police Command comes in response to the outcry from the public and the assurance of justice for the victims and their families. The statement released by the CP reiterates the commitment to upholding professional policing standards and respecting the rights of all citizens in line with the constitution.

The incident has generated significant attention and led to calls for accountability and justice, as the injured vigilantes continue to receive medical care. The community has urged authorities to take action and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
