Umar Sadiq Takes on Diaz in the Race for La Liga GOTM Award

Real Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq has been nominated for the Spanish La Liga Goal of The Month Award for his goal against Osasuna in December, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Sadiq made a strong comeback after missing most of last season due to injury. He scored a remarkable goal from 25 yards on November 26, helping Real Sociedad secure a 2-1 victory over Sevilla.

This goal marked his first for Real Sociedad since September 3, 2022.

Sadiq’s goal is competing against Brahim Diaz’s strike against Villarreal and Aitor Ruibal’s against Real Madrid for the award.

Sadiq has been named in Jose Peseiro’s 41-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, positioning himself for a spot in the final squad list for the tournament.

He is expected to vie for a place in the final squad among players such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Cyriel Dessers, Emmanuel Dennis, Terem Moffi, and Paul Onuachu.

Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed his confidence in Sadiq’s potential impact for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Scheduled from January 13 to February 11 in Ivory Coast, the AFCON sees Nigeria drawn against the host Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in Group A of the tournament.

Siasia is of the opinion that Sadiq should be a key figure in Peseiro’s attacking lineup during the tournament.

“Sadiq (Umar) is very good,” Siasia shared with the Africa Interviews. “They need to give him a chance and give him the kind of confidence he needs. Then he’s going to surprise. We see him playing in his club and he’s doing very well. He can do the same thing here (with the Eagles team).”
