A woman, identified as Hajiya Tabawa Ado, aged 38, who had recently been deported from Saudi Arabia, committed suicide by plunging into a stream in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

She took this extreme step to escape persistent harassment from the agent who had sponsored her trip to Saudi Arabia, as per reports.

According to an unnamed resident, the woman had been sponsored by an agent to go to Saudi Arabia with the agreement that she would repay him.

“Women and men have been traveling to Saudi Arabia in search of better opportunities, with some women serving as domestic workers,” the resident narrated.

“She was sponsored to Saudi Arabia and upon realizing that she could not endure the maltreatment in the house where she worked, she decided to flee. Unfortunately, she was arrested and subsequently deported back to Nigeria.

“Since then, the agent has been demanding repayment, which she was unable to make. I later heard that she drowned in the Kafin Kainuwa stream and tragically lost her life,” the resident added.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Jigawa State Command, CSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on Christmas Day at around 7:45 pm.

“The NSCDC received Information that a 38-year-old woman, Hajiya Tabawa Ado Musa, plunged into a stream called Rafin Kainuwa located at Marakawa Ringim town in Ringim Local Government Area.

“Her body was later found on Tuesday and taken to Ringin General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death,” he said.

It was revealed during the investigation that the woman had been battling epilepsy for some years.

The deceased, survived by her husband and children, has been laid to rest according to Islamic customs.
