AFCON 2023: NFF and Peseiro at loggerheads over Super Eagles squad for the finals

Reports suggest that there is currently tension between the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and Jose Peseiro, the national team’s head coach, regarding the final squad list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sources have informed NewsNow that Peseiro has submitted a 25-man squad for the upcoming tournament, but the NFF is pushing for a 27-man squad.

Despite the NFF’s pressure, Peseiro is adamant that managing a 25-player squad would be more manageable than 27 players.

It is worth noting that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) permits countries to name up to 27 players in their AFCON squads, with only 23 being eligible for registration on match days.

Prior to this clash, Peseiro had also disputed the original provisional list by submitting 40 players instead of the 50 requested by the federation.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to depart for a training camp in Dubai, UAE, in preparation for the upcoming competition.
