The 2024 budget presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been criticized by Wumi Iledare, Professor Emeritus and Executive Director of the Emmanuel Egbogah Foundation. In an interview with NewsNow, Iledare expressed concerns about the feasibility of the assumptions underlying the budget. He questioned the optimistic GDP growth projection, the daily crude oil production, and the budget deficit. Iledare emphasized that the budget’s assumptions are uncertain and may not be achievable, referring to the GDP growth as a performance outcome rather than a reliable input for the budget. He also deemed the assumptions regarding oil price and production as unrealistic, stating that it makes the budget highly susceptible to a larger deficit than projected. However, he acknowledged the government’s need for the budget to stimulate the economy, emphasizing the importance of fiscal discipline and accountability from government agencies.
