Appeal court upholds Alex Ottis election as Abia Governor

The election of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has been upheld by the Court of Appeal in Lagos, as the appeals brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their governorship candidates were dismissed. The three-man Appeal Court panel unanimously upheld Otti’s victory, stating that it conformed with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The court described the petitions brought by the appellants as lacking in merit, likening them to “a comedy skit brought to a democratic setting.” It ruled that issues of political party membership are a pre-election matter, falling within the jurisdiction of the political party. Additionally, the court stated that Otti, having joined the Labour Party, won its primary election and submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was qualified to contest. The appeal court also dismissed the issues of Bimodial Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, brought by the PDP and its candidate, as the appellants failed to demonstrate or link their documentary evidence to the specific parts of the case. The judgement has led to celebrations among Governor Otti’s supporters in some parts of the State.
