Vandal to die by hanging, accomplice bags 16 years

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has issued a death sentence by hanging for Clement Ododomu, a vandal, and a 16-year imprisonment for his accomplice, Tiwei Monday. The verdict was delivered by Justice Hakeem Oshodi, who found the two guilty of murder and conspiracy. The judgment, which was initially scheduled for November 14, 2023, was delayed due to the Nigerian Labour Congress strike action. The two vandals were convicted for killing seven officers of the Department of State Services in the Ikorodu area.
Despite the defense counsel’s plea for mercy, the judge upheld the convictions, stating that the law binds everyone. The court held that Ododomu was convicted on multiple counts, including murder, and is liable to the death sentence as prescribed by the Criminal Laws of Lagos State. The judge also pointed out that the defense’s claim of attending their grandmother’s funeral in Lagos was unsubstantiated and that the prosecution failed to prove the second defendant’s guilt of murder.
While the court acquitted the convicts on some counts, it sentenced them to imprisonment for other counts. Ododomu received varying prison terms, and the terms were to run concurrently. The court ruled that for specific counts, the first convict would be hanged until death, emphasizing the lack of remorse shown by the defendants throughout the proceedings.
The charges against the convicts detailed the distressing events that led to the killing of the DSS officers in 2015 in the Ishawo Creek, Ikorodu, Lagos.
