Several members of the Rivers State Police Command have been taken into custody as they stand accused of fatally harming an individual named Eze Nyebuchi from the Woji community in Obio Akpor.
The Commissioner of Police for the state, Olatunji Disu, affirmed the detentions in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by the department’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko.
He stated that the implicated police officers, as well as a suspect connected to the mistreatment and death of Nyebuchi, had been apprehended.
“We have inspected the crime scene and extended our condolences to the deceased Nyebuchi’s family members.
“Those involved in Nyebuchi’s demise, including the police officers, have been apprehended and are presently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department,’’ he declared.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Nyebuchi, a landlord, was detained by the police after forcibly ejecting a tenant from his property.
Following significant pressure from the Woji Community Council of Chiefs, the police ultimately disclosed the landlord’s location after several days in custody.
Due to public outcry, a search operation was conducted, leading to the discovery of Nyebuchi’s decomposed body in an unfinished building in Chokocho, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers.
Shortly after the discovery of the body, Woji community youths took to the streets on Monday to express their outrage over the alleged mistreatment and killing of Nyebuchi.
The disruptive demonstration escalated into a violent clash between the demonstrators and the police, with shots being fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
The paramount ruler of Woji Community, Eze Emeka Ihunwo, mentioned that injuries were observed on Nyebuchi’s head and jaw, suggesting that he had been fatally beaten.
“I urge our youths to maintain peace as justice will be served,’’ the paramount ruler assured.
