Addressing the press and explaining the rationale behind the joint initiative in Uyo, the AKIRS chairman, Okon Okon, emphasized the need for constant enlightenment and education of taxpayers on contemporary taxation issues and potential reforms.

Okon stated, “We are undertaking this joint enlightenment program as part of our duty to enlighten and educate the tax public about tax matters and potential reforms, to facilitate compliance without coercion.”

Dr. Cletus Adie, the Coordinator of FIRS for Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Cross River, emphasized the significance of taxpayers in tax administration, stressing that business cannot exist without them. Adie also highlighted the importance of taxation in sustaining the global economy, stating the need to lessen reliance on oil as it may not be sustainable.

He mentioned, “The purpose of this program is to educate our taxpayers. Our tax administration is propelled by laws and education. Taxpayers are fundamental to our business, and we must ensure that they have a fair understanding of our operations and their responsibilities to the government, as well as the government’s responsibilities to tax-paying citizens.”

Adie further explained the collaboration between FIRS and AKIRS, emphasizing that both entities are involved in revenue mobilization to enhance the welfare of the state, regardless of whether they are operating at the state or federal level.
