Varsity plans mass burial of corpses abandoned for over 10 years

The Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu State has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the families of 33 abandoned corpses in the hospital’s mortuary. Failure to comply with the evacuation order will result in the university proceeding with a mass burial for the deceased individuals. The ultimatum given on November 13 is necessary to allow the university to carry out renovations on the mortuary, as announced by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, during a news conference held in Enugu. Some of the corpses have been in the mortuary for more than 18 years, and the renovations and upgrades are aimed at making the mortuary fit for a teaching hospital.
The university has obtained a court injunction to carry out the mass burial. Anieke appealed to the families with corpses in the mortuary to come and remove them, emphasizing the importance of treating the deceased individuals with respect. Additionally, the teaching hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Cajetan Nwadinigwe, revealed that a significant number of corpses found in the facility lack proper identification. He also highlighted the issue of 14 deceased individuals sharing the same name and the absence of records for the dates of deposition of some of the corpses in the mortuary, some of which have been there for more than 10 years. This serves as the basis for the university’s approach to the court and the advertisement of a warning in newspapers for families to take appropriate action.
