The drivers alleged that the NUPENG president, Williams, lacked the necessary qualifications to lead the union since he was not a member of the oil union. They claimed that Williams was previously employed as a cook in an oil company from the formal sector and was later removed from the company while serving as the national treasurer of NUPENG. They also accused him of manipulating the system to become the President of NUPENG.
Dismissing the claims, NUPENG Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, stated that the faction issuing the statement was not affiliated with the PTD. He also mentioned that the leaders of the faction had been apprehended and detained at Kuje prison in Abuja, following an attack on NUPENG leaders in the capital.
The situation underscores the internal discord within NUPENG and the possibility of a split from the Petroleum Tanker Drivers arm, posing a significant challenge to the union’s stability.
