Authorities issue caution regarding potential protest over Kano governor’s dismissal

The statement revealed, “The warning comes as a result of credible information indicating the intention of certain political party supporters to organize protests using unconventional media platforms, in response to the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court’s decision on Friday, November 17, 2023.
“The information suggests that the protesters aim to disrupt the state’s peace, with the potential for violence.”
“It is for this reason that the police command has cautioned residents to be vigilant, advising those planning any protests or processions to do so in compliance with the law.”
Prior to the court’s ruling, the leadership of both the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the All Progressives Congress were summoned by the state police command to sign a peace accord on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
The primary objective of the peace accord was to ensure harmony and peaceful coexistence regardless of the verdict’s outcome.
Additionally, the parties’ leadership pledged not to permit politically motivated gatherings or engage in actions that may incite violence, and to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could escalate political tensions.
They committed to monitoring, adhering to, and abiding by the details outlined in the peace accord signed with the Kano State Police Command.
Furthermore, they vowed to support the security measures put in place to maintain peace and order, and warned that any individuals or groups disrupting the peace before, during, or after the appeal court’s ruling would face legal consequences.
Following the peace accord, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, urged all residents to remain calm and avoid unlawful gatherings, protests, or processions that could instigate violence, as joint security forces have been deployed to strategic locations to preserve peace and order across the state.
He emphasized, “Anyone attempting to disrupt the peace will be apprehended and dealt with according to the law.”
Expressing appreciation for the public’s cooperation, support, and understanding, the CP encouraged them to report any suspicious activities.
