Members of the House of Representatives are seeking justice for a slain corps member

Her murder received nationwide condemnation, sparking calls for increased security from individuals, civil society organizations, and the National Youths Service Corps.
In response, the House adopted a resolution to collaborate with relevant security agencies in order to apprehend the murderers, as proposed by Beni Lar, the representative for Langtang North/Langtang South Federal Constituency, Plateau State.
In her lead debate, Lar reminded her colleagues that “On October 18, 2023, Miss Grace Silas, a National Youth Service Corps member deployed to Kaduna State, was brutally murdered while jogging in Barnawa, Kaduna South Local Government Area.”
Lar added that the deceased was from Tabat in Langtang North Federal Constituency, Plateau State, and was a graduate in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Jos.
She also expressed her dismay that the unfortunate death of Grace “is one of numerous murders of innocent girls and women across the country, with the perpetrators often unpunished or not brought to justice.”
The lawmaker further emphasized that the safety and security of girls are no longer guaranteed, stating that “given the continued freedom enjoyed by these heinous attackers, who still roam the streets hunting their next victim.”
Lar argued that ensuring swift justice in this case would deter potential perpetrators and ensure a safer Nigeria for all, highlighting that justice delayed is justice denied.
In her words, “If nothing is done to stop the continuous attacks, rape, and murder of young girls and women, it would render the country unsafe to live.”
The House, through a unanimous adoption of the motion, urged the Kaduna state Commissioner of Police to swiftly identify and apprehend the assailants.
The House also called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that justice is swiftly served in the case. Additionally, the House mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the murderer of Grace Silas.
The House further called on the House Committee on Youth Development to review the safety of Corps members during their one-year National Youth Service Corps assignments, reach out to the family, and collaborate with the police in their investigation of the corps member’s killers.
